BBC’s Eggheads is presented by Dermot Murnaghan.  Teams are quizzed on subjects such as Sport, Entertainment, Food and Drink, Arts and Books, Politics, History, Geography, Science and General Knowledge.

The aim is to find an opposing team brave and talented enough to beat our Eggheads.  In each episode a cash prize is available to the team who can beat them.  If they are not beaten the prize rolls over to the next show…the tension rises as the money increases!

Are you brave enough?

BDO SIGNS 5 YEAR AGREEMENT WITH WINMAU

The British Darts Organisation has signed an exclusive five year endorsement agreement with the Winmau Dartboard Company that secures the Winmau World Masters until 2010.

The oldest major darts tournament in the world has been staged by the BDO since 1974, and the new agreement confirms the successful liaison between the world’s premier dartboard manufacturer and the world’s largest and most respected darts organisation.

“We are delighted with the ongoing success of the World Masters and the position that it holds in world darts”, says Ian Flack, Sales and Marketing Director of  Winmau. “It is important that we plan for the future, and this is an extremely positive agreement that will benefit all those concerned – in particular the players and the sport of darts”.

“The BDO is proud of its wonderful relationship with Wimau for more than thirty years”, says Olly Croft, “and this new agreement cements the bond between us. We can now plan ahead and provide more positives for our players and the sport of darts”.

Winmau sponsors BDO World Champions Andy Fordham and Trina Gulliver, and as well as continuing to supply the BDO with premium quality bristle dartboards for all of its events, in return the BDO will continue to exclusively endorse Winmau dartboards – as they have done for the last thirty-three years.

The agreement also confirms that the Winmau Blade III board will be used in all BDO televised darts tournaments – the Lakeside World Professional Darts Championships, the Winmau World Masters and all those screened by Eurosport – and the two organisations will continue to work together to promote the sport of darts worldwide.

Importantly,  there will be an ongoing commitment to the grass roots of darts, as epitomised by the annual Winmau Boys and Girls World Masters.

The 2006 Winmau World Masters will be played at Leisure World, Bridlington from October 13th to 15th and full details will be announced separately.

However, from 2007 to 2010 inclusively, Winmau have made a commitment to increase prize money year on year as part of the new agreement.

“Again, it confirms our overall commitment to the World Masters, the BDO, its players and the sport of darts”, adds Ian Flack. “It clearly illustrates that we are constantly looking to the future, and our liaison with darts through the BDO and WDF is of prime importance to the growth and success of Winmau and the sport of darts”.

To celebrate the agreement, Winmau are offering an all-expenses paid weekend for one lucky couple to the televised finals of the 2006 Winmau World Masters – plus a Blade III board signed by Winmau sponsored World Champions Andy Fordham and Trina Gulliver.

The full prize is for two people and comprises:

  • Hotel accommodation in Bridlington on Saturday, October 14th.
  • Surface travel costs and reasonable food and drink expenses will be covered.
  • VIP access to the Winmau Players Lounge and Winmau VIP Suite at Leisure World
  • Tickets for the Winmau Dinner/Dance on Saturday, October 14th attended by the top players.
  • The Blade III board autographed by Andy Fordham and Trina Gulliver.

To have a chance of winning all of this you have to answer the following simple question.

The Winmau World Masters is the oldest established major in World Darts.  In which year was it first played?

A:        1994

B:        1974

C:        1984

BDO AGREEMENT FOR IDL AND WDT

The Board of Directors of the British Darts Organisation have ratified an agreement with Dutch broadcaster SBS-6 and promoter Ad Schoofs, which will look after the best interests of BDO/WDF playing members competing in both the International Darts League and World Darts Trophy until 2010.

The agreement, which was negotiated with valuable assistance and input from the IDPA, was signed after the recent BDO AGM and represents yet another commitment to the future of darts at the very highest level.

“We have had an excellent relationship with SBS-6 since they first televised the Lakeside World Professional Darts Championships in 1998”, says Olly Croft, “and I am delighted that this agreement protects our players interests in these high-profile Dutch tournaments.

“The success of both the IDL and WDT is contained in the fact that both are part of the BDO’s Grand Slam title and carry valuable BDO ranking points for our players.

Scotland’s first ever World No.1 Gary Anderson, is the top seed in the 2006 Bavaria World Darts Trophy which will be played in Utrecht from September 2nd to 10th and televised exclusively by SBS-6.

NEW ZEALAND DARTS CHAMPIONSHIPS:  DAY 5

The DB Draught NZ Ladies Pairs final was played between  title Jannette Jonathan & Megan Smith  and Piki Morrison & Jane Harrington.

Piki and Jane took out the first leg but Jannette squared up the match by pegging a 91 finish in the next leg. Megan followed suit in the 3rd leg with a 40 finish. Piki took the next and Megan finished the next 2 legs giving her and Jannette the title.

This is the second win for the pair having won it together back in 1999 and also the 9th  win for the Jannette with her previous wins being in 89,90,91,92, 2001, 03, 04 and 2005 when she was partnered by her sister Marion Morgan.

The Men’s final saw first time finalists Joe Tamarama (Kapi Mana) and Graeme McElroy  (Auckland) square up after all the seeded players had been knocked out of the draw. It was somewhat of a nail biting final with both players ending up on 3 legs each going into the seventh leg. McElroy proved to be to strong for Joe and won the match in 15 darts - 100,95,140,60 and finished on 106 by hitting 20/T18/D16. The crowd showed their admiration for both players by giving them a standing ovation.

ITS A DOUBLE OZZ AT THE NEW ZEALAND OPEN

Womens Singles winner Carol Forwood

         Men's Singles Winner Tony David

Results from day 4 -  Wed 9th August

410 Competitors (257Men / 153 Ladies) entered to contest the  New Zealand Community Trust Open Singles event at the 2006 NZ Darts Championships chasing not only World and NZ Ranking Points but also a chance at collecting the Bounty of “$10,000 for a perfect 9 dart leg game” offered by co sponsors Puma Darts Products of Kati Kati.

The Ladies Final was played between Hutt Valley’s Chrissy Sheerin and Carol Forwood (Austraila)

Carol is the Australian No 1 Ranked lady and made the trip across in the hope of gaining some very valuable World Ranking points to help secure an invitation to the English “Lakeside World Professional” Grand slam tournament in England later this year. Carol proved to strong for Chrissy and her efforts were rewarded with a 4 legs to1 victory. Carol threw 2 maximum 180 scores in the match and Chrissy threw on as well. This is Carol’s second trip to New Zealand in 2 months and the trips have proved very successful for her by now winning back to back titles, the NZ Masters and NZ Open titles.

In the men’s final it was Canterbury’s Warren French up against former Embassy World Darts Champion Tony David from Australia. Tony took control of the match from the very first dart and didn’t give Warren any quarter by winning 4 - 1. Tony, like Carol needs World ranking points to secure an invite to the lucrative English tournaments and this win will give him a valuable 14 points.

In a closing speech Tony thanked the crowd and New Zealand Darts for running a great tournament and he hope to be able to return next year to defend his title.

SAM HAWKINS IS MADE HONORARY PRESIDENT OF THE BDO

Sam pictured with his wife Marie

SAM HAWKINS, who announced his retirement as Chairman of the BDO after 18 years in the post, has been unanimously elected Honorary President to recognise his long and distinguished service to the BDO and the sport of darts.

Announcing this at the recent BDO AGM, Olly Croft said: “On behalf of the BDO Board of Directors and everyone connected to BDO darts, I offer our sincere thanks to Sam Hawkins for all that he has done for the BDO and the sport of darts since we formed the BDO back in the early 1970s.

“We  regretfully accept Sam’s decision to retire as BDO Chairman, a post that he has held for the last 18

years, and there is no doubt that he will be greatly missed as a respected administrator and good friend to all who know him.  “Without doubt, it is the end of an era and it would take several pages to list all of Sam’s achievements over more than thirty years with the BDO. Suffice it to say that he and his lovely wife Marie, have devoted their lives to the BDO and darts – and like so many of those who willingly give up their time voluntarily for our sport, are often the unsung heroes of what they have helped to achieve for the overall benefit of the sport.

“We may have lost a respected Chairman, but we have now gained an Honorary President, and it will be a great pleasure to welcome him to any of our future events in his new – and well earned – capacity. It goes some way to expressing our grateful thanks to his unselfish commitment to the BDO and darts over such a long and valued period of time.

“I am sure we will be marking Sam’s retirement in a more official manner in the near future, but for now, myself and the BDO Board are proud to recognise the achievements of a great Chairman, colleague and friend”.
