FINLAND OPEN 2005: REPORT

Finland`s President Timo Korpela has sent us this report...

Marko Pusa is back on top form again after two years in the wilderness. He beat England’s Mervyn King 5-2 in the final and produced some excellent darts to do so. Marko took the first two legs with 19 and 11 darts, but Mervyn came back and levelled the match with 15 and 18 darts legs. Confident Pusa then took the last three legs in row with 16, 18 and 14 darts and became the first finnish player to win the Finland Open since 1983. Marko’s average in the final was 31,78 and Mervyn’s 28,09.

“I started hard practising only two months ago and I was surprised to see these kind of results already now”, he said afterwards. “My goal was IDL 2006, but perhaps I need to change that now. Just maybe I might get enough points to get invited to the Lakeside as well”, said the happy winner.

On his way to the final Marko beat Vincent van der Voort 4-3 in the Quarter-Finals and Kenneth Högwall 4-2 in the Semi-Finals. Mervyn beat Per Laursen 4-2 in the Quarter-Finals and Co Stompe in the Semi-Finals 4-1.

The women’s final saw once again the two best lady players in the world competing against each others. This time it was Francis Hoenselaar who took the championship winning 4-1 against Trina Gulliver. In the Semi-Finals Francis beat Rachel Dixon 3-1 and Trina won 3-0 against Anastasia Dobromyslova.

Martin Adams and Mervyn King took the Men’s Pairs beating Sweden’s Peter Wahlsten and Matti Rågegård 4-0 in the Final. Inita Bite from Latvia and Anastasia took the Women’s Pairs beating Sweden’s Maud Jansson and Paulina Söderström 3-1, England’s Stephen Bunting took the Men’s 301 Singles (double in, double out) and Sari Nikula of Finland won the Women’s 301 Singles. Holland’s Jonny Nijs became the Youth Singles Champion and Veikko Holmqvist from Sweden took the Old Boys title.
