OBITUARY:   JACK (Mr.180) PRICE

On behalf of the British Darts Organisation it is my sad duty to report the passing of JACK PRICE at the age of 77.

Jack was the original BDO MC/referee and a real front runner for all the MC’s and referees who have subsequently followed in his footsteps. He was also the first to be nicknamed ‘Mr.180’ and, having been involved prior to the BDO being established, he was then instrumental in the setting up of the BDO in 1973 and became our first high-profile caller and referee.

He was MC at all our major events in the 1970s – including the Winmau World Masters and World Professional Darts Championship. All the top players of that era knew and respected Jack, and he will be greatly missed by us all.

He passed away in Southmead Hospital, Bristol after a long illness, and the sport of darts will be all the poorer without him.  Our sincere condolences are sent to his family at this sad time.

God Bless.   OLLY CROFT

BDO OFFERS NEW CHALLENGE TO YOUNG TALENT

The BDO’s youth policies have always fostered and encouraged the skills of young darts players of both sexes, and now there is to be a new incentive for players in the 18 to 25 category.

The BDO is to create a separate qualification section which will enable players – male and female - in the 18 to 25 age range to qualify for the 2006 Winmau World Masters Finals and the 2006 International Play-Offs for the 2007 Lakeside World Professional Darts Championships.

The players must be BDO registered at Super League or County level, and must be 18 years of age, but not over 25 years of age at October 1st, 2006.

“The BDO has always recognised the vital importance of youth darts”, says Olly Croft, “but the 18 to 25 age range is perhaps the most important of all. This is the period when talent starts to come through and can be nurtured with regular competition and guidance through the BDO playing systems.

“There are lots of good young players out there who will be more than encouraged by the success of Jelle Klaasen, who at just 21, is the youngest ever BDO Lakeside World Professional Darts Champion.”

The players will be identified through the BDO member Counties and Youth and Super Leagues, and there will be designated play-offs.

The players who qualify from these play-offs will then be invited to both the Winmau World Masters Finals and the International Play-Offs for the 2007 Lakeside World Professional Darts Championships.

DARTS ON THE OFFENSIVE IN SOUTH AFRICA

The South African National Darts Championships will be held at Vista University, Bloemfontein, Free State from Monday 10 to Saturday 15 July 2006.  Our Youth Nationals will also be played in Bloemfontein from 13 to 15 July 2006.

We have also launched a country-wide initiative to grow and develop darts.  The programme enjoys financial support from our National Lottery, our Government, the Winmau Dartboard Company, and Sportsman's Warehouse (a major local sports equipment retailer).

The programme is titled OPERATION BULLSEYE and focuses on the following projects:

Let's Play Darts - A community-driven project that introduces the game to adults and the disabled and encourages them to join local leagues.
Adopt A School - Local clubs and associations are encouraged to engage with schools in their area.  Learners are introduced to the basics with special attention on the skills of the game, the importance of calculations, discipline, substance abuse (drugs) and the rules of the game.
Aiming For Tops - An excellence  programme for our senior players who are coached on improving their playing skills with the objective of maintaining our No.1 ranking in Zone VI (Southern Africa) and internationally.
RAP - This Responsible Administration Project provides training for officials and organisers in various administrative and technical functions.  The objective is to raise organisational practice and broaden our base of match officials.

In the Western (Cape Town) we have a group of blind darts players and a group who blow darts.  We are working with the National body for disabled sport - DISSA - to increase the playing numbers amongst the disabled.

Together with Winmau and Sportsman's Warehouse we are setting-up in-store promotions involving our Protea (national) players.  The public will be invited to challenge these players and encouraged to join a local league.  With the same sponsors, we will be launching a national circuit of Classic tournaments (a 1st for SA) soon after our National Championships.  These are just some of the projects that we hope will promote the sport and improve excellence.
