ROYAL CONGRATULATIONS FOR BARNEY

Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands sent a personal letter of congratulation to RAYMOND VAN BARNEVELD within minutes of his fourth Lakeside World Professional Darts Championship victory.

The faxed letter bearing the royal crown arrived at the British Darts Organisation press office at Lakeside and was immediately translated by the large contingent of Dutch media present for the final.

But that wasn’t the only official gesture by The Netherlands.

The Dutch Ambassador in London arrived in the official embassy car, registration NL 1, and brought with him the Dutch Sports Minister, Clemence van Dorp, who flew over to attend the Champions dinner and congratulate Raymond personally.

A strong supporter of darts, she read Queen Beatrix’s message to Raymond, and then delivered an inspiring and wonderfully supportive speech on behalf of darts.

Chelsea superstar and Dutch International ARJEN ROBBEN was also in the Lakeside audience to cheer Raymond to victory.

It was the perfect end to a perfect day for the Dutchman dubbed ‘The Man’. He has now been in five World finals at Lakeside and won four of them. He’s already planning to make it five in 2006.

09.01.2005 LAKESIDE 2005 FINAL: BARNEY MAKES IT NUMBER FOUR

Raymond van Barneveld won his 4th. World Pro Title at Lakeside today beating a gallant Martin Adams in a Final of the highest quality. It was "Wolfie" who surprised the packed Lakeside audience by taking the first set against the throw. This stung "Barney" into raising his game, and he proceeded to take the the next four sets, two of them against the throw. At this stage there was very little to choose between them score-wise, but barney was hitting the doubles with a vengence. After the break "Barney" continued where he had left off and broke Martin twice to take the set 3 - 0. With "Barney" throwing for the match in the 7th. set "Wolfie promptly won the first and third legs against the darts to take the set 3 - 0 and reduce the match arrears to 5 sets to two. The 8th set saw some magnificent darts with Martin applying tremendous pressure. "Barney" was, however, equal to the task and secured his fourth World Championship.

“The generosity of those within the BDO family of darts knows no bounds, and we are extremely proud of the fantastic amount of money raised at the World Professional this week”, says Olly Croft of the British Darts Organisation.

The premier Championships in World Darts commenced with a perfectly observed one-minute silence to respect the victims of the Asian disaster.
