2006 INTERNATIONAL DARTS LEAGUE AND WORLD DARTS TROPHY

The British Darts Organisation is delighted to confirm that the International Darts League (May 6-14) and Bavaria World Darts Trophy (Sept.2-10) will continue as WDF/BDO Grand Slam events,  with twenty-eight  WDF/BDO players competing for the two most prestigious darts titles in The Netherlands.

However, Dutch broadcaster SBS-6, who have just enjoyed the biggest TV audiences in their history with the 2006 BDO Lakeside World Professional Darts Championships, have decided to invite four

non-WDF/BDO players in 2006.

This has been done in agreement with SBS-6 and the owner and promoter of both tournaments, Schoofs Management & Events/Maximum Score.

It is important to confirm that both majors will continue as WDF/BDO ranking events, with all available points going only to the WDF/BDO players competing.

The BDO is proud that it is the only organisation to have a system for women’s darts and to have introduced the Women’s World Professional in 2001, so it is naturally disappointed that there will no longer be a women’s championship integral  to the WDT.

This is a great shame, but once again it is the decision of the broadcaster and promoter.

The BDO is, however, delighted that both the IDL and WDT will benefit from separate youth events, because the WDF/BDO systems continue to produce outstanding young talent like 2006 Lakeside World Pro Champion Jelle Klaasen to ensure the future of the sport of darts.

The 2006 Int. Darts League and Bavaria World Darts Trophy will invite PDC players and talented youth players

The 2006 International Darts League and Bavaria World Darts Trophy will remain predominantly WDF/BDO, with WDF/BDO players from the rankings and WDF/BDO wild cards. However, for the first time  PDC players will be invited to both the 2006 International Darts League and Bavaria World Darts Trophy.

And following the outstanding success of Jelle Klaasen in the 2006 Lakeside World Professional, and the emergence of young Dutch darts talents like Niels de Ruiter, Mareno Michels and Michael van Gerwen, there will be a separate youth tournament in both events.

SBS-6 have agreed to the new format with the organiser and promoter, Schoofs Management & Events/Maximum Score, to add to the ongoing popularity of darts in Holland.

Earlier this month, the BDO’s Lakeside World Professional Darts Championships produced the biggest ever audiences for SBS-6. This averaged at 3.9 million and peaked at 5.03 million viewers for the all-Dutch final between Jelle Klaasen and Raymond van Barneveld.

It has also been agreed that there will no longer be a separate tournament for women at the Bavaria World Darts Trophy.  This will be replaced with a youth tournament - as in the International Darts League - to showcase young darts talent and provide them with the necessary experience of competing on the big stage.

The International Darts League (May 6-14 in Nijmegen) and the Bavaria World Darts Trophy (September 2-10 in Utrecht) will be broadcasted exclusively by SBS 6 in The Netherlands.

SANDRA POLLET AND DIRK HESPEELS ARE BELGIAN SINGLES CHAMPIONS 2006

Last Sunday the Belgian Singles Championships were held in Halle (near Brussels) with a very good attendance of the players.

All the titles went to the favourites.

Sandra Pollet was the winner of the women's title with a 4-1 victory over outsider Brenda Sacré. Wendy Beutels and Carine Dessein were the Semi-Finalists.

Again no surprise in the men's competition, where Dirk Hespeels was too strong for an other outsider,  Billy Caluwaerts. The final ended in a 5-1 victory for Dirk.
Chris Braekevelt and Marco Taels were the Semi-Finalists.

The Belgian Youth Champions were: Ina Vaneerdewegh (Girls), Niels Van Bergen (Boys - 18) and Dimitri Van Den Bergh (Boys - 13).

MILLIONS OF TV VIEWERS AROUND THE WORLD TUNED INTO LAKESIDE 2006

A BBC-2 audience of 4.2 million enjoyed the exciting BDO 2006 Lakeside World Professional Darts Championship final between qualifier JELLE KLAASEN and four times Lakeside World Pro Champion RAYMOND van BARNEVELD.

21 year-old Klaasen has become the youngest ever BDO World Pro Champion, and his 7-5 victory produced an even bigger TV audience in his native Holland, where an incredible 5.03 million viewers – one in every three of the population – watched as a new and exciting Dutch darts hero heralded in a new era for the sport.

During the whole week of the Championships, Dutch broadcaster SBS-6 enjoyed the best ever audience ratings in their history.

BBC viewing figures were up 14% on 2005, and the interactive service came into its own with more people than ever before pressing the red-button to follow live darts every day.  Provisional figures show that the interactive reach for the tournament was 1.1 million.

If you add to this the first ever Eurosport coverage (the BDO have signed a 3 year-deal with Eurosport), shown in 80 countries and available in 104 million homes, plus BBC Worldwide sales into over 70 countries, there can be no doubt that Lakeside 2006 enjoyed the biggest TV audiences for darts anywhere in the world.

The precocious talent of Jelle Klassen – allied to his good looks and stature - has excited and attracted a new generation of darts players and fans.  Thousands greeted him on his return home and he was featured by eight different television companies in Holland.

He is a new Dutch superstar who has become the first player to emerge from the Lakeside International Play-Offs and win the most prestigious crown in World Darts since Keith Deller in 1983 – and Jelle wasn’t even born then!

“We are so proud of him because he epitomises the strength in depth of the WDF/BDO system”, says Olly Croft of the BDO. “Only we can provide the opportunity for talents like his to be nurtured from youth right through to national, international, world and professional levels. The proof is contained in the fact that he is 2006 BDO World Professional Darts Championship.

“He is our 18th World Champion and the 14th to be crowned at Lakeside since 1986.  Again, this shows that the WDF/BDO system continually brings through new darts talents to ensure the growth of the sport globally.

“From the extensive reaction to his win, Jelle already knows what it means to win the greatest Championship in world darts.   He joins an impressive list of darting talents produced by the World Pro”.

Incredibly, Jelle has only been playing for four years. He was inspired to do so by his uncle, and admits to becoming ‘hooked’ when he beat him.

“I loved the game from that moment on”, he says, “and all I could think of was playing as often as I could and getting better and better”.

The son of a hotel worker and truck driver, Jelle turned professional last December and his parents are very proud of what he has achieved is such a short time.  He also plays pool, snooker and tennis and actually stopped playing football to concentrate on darts. “Every sport I play I want to win”, he adds. “That’s what is important to me – to be a winner – and I now have the greatest title in darts.  How special is that?”

Jelle’s appearance has also attracted attention.  He is tall, slim, fit and doesn’t drink or smoke.  He’s also the first World Pro Champion with a lip-piercing.

“I had it done a month before Lakeside and it brought me good luck” he says.  “I also have a tribal tattoo”.

He also has the nickname of ‘The Matador’.  By way of explanation he says with a smile: “It’s because I’m very quick and rarely miss the bull”.

Confidence, style and youth are among Jelle Klaasen’s attributes.  He arrived at Lakeside as a relative ‘unknown’ but after his win he is already a major figure in world darts.

Such is the magic of a Championship that not only has all the history and kudos in the sport of darts, but is also the best watched and most coveted in the world.

And the magic continues for Jelle, because he’s been named in the Dutch squad to play in the Six Nations Cup in Cornwall on February 25 & 26. His team-mates will be: Raymond van Barneveld, Co Stompe, Vincent van der Voort (all Lakeside favourites) and two more young talents who made their BDO debuts at Lakeside – Mareno Michells and Niels de Ruiter.

The BDO’s 2007 Lakeside World Professional Darts Championships will be played at Lakeside Country Club, ‘the home of world darts’ from January 6th to 14th, 2007.
