This year she was sensationally beaten in the last 16 round by 16 year old Anastasia Belyeva who hails from the Urals.

ENGLAND ANNOUNCE THEIR EUROPE CUP 2006 TEAMS

Whilst the England Women's team was exactly as expected, the England selectors have surprised many people with their selection for the Men's team, and include two players for whom playing in a WDF Cup competition will be a new experience.  Shaun Greatbatch is, of course, well known all over the World. The other new face is the experienced Steve Farmer. Steve does not play the international circuit, and is relatively unknown outside the UK.

The teams are:

Women:  Clare Bywaters and Trina Gulliver.

Men:  Martin Adams, Steve Farmer, Shaun Greatbatch, and Tony O'Shea.

CENTRAL COAST LEAGUES CLUB AUSTRALIAN CLASSIC 2006

There appears to be some confusion concerning the Ranking/Invitation Table points which the above mentioned event carries. The WDF can confirm that the event is WDF Ranked, and it also carries points for the BDO, IDL, and WDT events. The Women's event carries WDF and BDO points.

NEW ZEALAND MASTERS 2006

Results from the 2006 New Zealand Open which was played last weekend are now available. The major shock of the tournament was the early exit of "aussie" ace Simon Whitlock who fell to Mark McGrath at the last 32 stage. The event is popular with the Australians who are intending to return again, in force, for the New Zealand Open later this year.

TICKER'S TROPHY TURNS UP AFTER 32 YEARS

After an absence of 32 years the family of Cliff "Ticker" Inglis are once again in possession of the very first  World Masters Trophy. Cliff won the title in 1974 when he beat Harry Heenan in the Final. The event was originally  called the Phonograph World Masters and retained that name for two years before Winmau took over the sponsorship and the  name in 1976.

The trophy was left in the care of Cliff's local landlord, who was also his manager, while he was away on an extended tour. Somehow, during that period, the trophy disappeared without trace.

The trophy re-surfaced recently and was presented to Cliff's last surviving brother Dave on the occasion of his 65th birthday.

The trophy (pictured left) is now resting comfortably on the mantlepiece at the Inglis family home.

YOUNG IRANIANS TAKE TO DARTS

IRAN, more noted for its nuclear ambitions than darts, is one of the latest countries to join the World Darts Federation.

And typically, they are not entering into the darts fraternity half-heartedly. Indeed, the country can already boast a staggering 500,000 men darts players and, perhaps more surprisingly, 220,000 women.

Now, like the majority of WDF countries, Iran is keen to get its youngsters involved in the sport. And the younger the better!

To this end, the Islamic Republic of Iran Darts Association  has recently staged its first ever Darts Olympiad for Children.

It attracted 400 young darts players – boys and girls age from 4 to 7 – and involved coaching staff and an enthusiasm and commitment that was praised by the UN.

“Sport has been found to help re-build communities, overcome trauma and bring jobs to many people”, says Adolf Ogi, Special Adviser to the UN Secretary General on Sport for Development and Peace. “Political, religious, gender and race barriers have been broken down when people play sport together”.
