NEW VENUE FOR 2006 BDO BRITISH OPEN AND 2006 WINMAU WORLD MASTERS

The 2006 BDO BRITISH OPEN and 2006 WINMAU WORLD MASTERS will be played at LEISURE WORLD, Bridlington while The Spa Royal Hall is undergoing a multi-million pound refurbishment programme in readiness for 2007.

The BDO British Open will be played in its ‘temporary home’ from Friday, September 15th  to  Sunday, September 17th, and for the first time ever the Singles will be broadcast live by Eurosport as part of a new broadcasting contract for Eurosport to screen BDO/WDF Open events throughout the year.

The Winmau World Masters will be played from Friday, October 13th to Sunday, October 15th, with the usual excellent TV coverage on BBC-1’s ‘Grandstand’ and BBC-2 ‘Sunday Grandstand’ over the weekend of October 14th and 15th.

The new venue is situated on Bridlington Promenade within walking distance of The Spa and has a whole range of facilities for family enjoyment and entertainment.

“The refurbishment work at The Spa Royal Hall will greatly improve the excellent facilities, but unfortunately won’t be ready in time for either the 2006 BDO British Open or the 2006 Winmau World Masters”, says Olly Croft.

“However, Bridlington has now become the home of both major tournaments and we didn’t want to go anywhere else. East Riding Council have always been welcoming to our darts and the players, officials and fans, and I thank them most sincerely for providing such an excellent temporary venue at Leisure World of the biggest major tournaments on the BDO calendar. And there is a real bonus, because both will be televised to huge audiences.”

The BD British Open is firmly established as one of the most popular events - for both players and spectators - on the British Darts Organisation calendar.

2006 is the 32nd staging of the BDO British Open, which made its successful Bridlington debut in 2003. It now returns for the 4th successive year.

The thirty-third Winmau World Masters is the final leg of the BDO’s prestigious Grand Slam title of televised majors, and will be staged for the fifth successive year in Bridlington. The oldest established major event in World Darts (first staged in 1974) it is unique for having four separate finals: Men, Women, Boys and Girls Masters.

As always, it is expected to attract hundreds of top players from over thirty countries.

LIVE INTERNATIONAL TELEVISED DARTS: BDO BRITISH INTERNATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS 2006

SATURDAY, APRIL 8TH & SUNDAY, APRIL 9TH   RHYDYCAR LEISURE CENTRE, MERTHYR TYDFIL

The 2006 BDO BRITISH INTERNATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS, the fiercely competitive annual clash between the home team rivals of England (Captained by MARTIN ADAMS), Wales (Captained by MARTIN PHILLIPS) and Scotland (Captained by MIKE VEITCH) will be televised LIVE on Eurosport 2 over the weekend of April 8th and 9th.

It is the latest leg of the exclusive 2006 Eurosport series of WDF/BDO tournaments, promoted by Dutch businessman Rob van Toor, who is also the manager of  Dutch International Karin Krappen, the current  Dutch No.1. and WDF  Women’s World No.2.

England Men have been triumphant for five consecutive years, so there will be an extra edge to the combative attitudes of the host nation Wales, and the ‘old enemy’ Scotland – both of whom will be keen to end the England run.

Coverage starts on Saturday (8th)  with WALES v SCOTLAND, which will be screened LIVE  from 17.00 hrs CET to 19.30 hrs CET.

On Sunday (9th) it is the always keenly anticipated battle between SCOTLAND v ENGLAND  LIVE from 13.30 hrs CET to 15.00 hrs CET.

The climax of the weekend will be ENGLAND v WALES, with the host nation closing the weekend of British Internationals from 17.00 CET to 19.30 hrs CET.

Players competing in the British Internationals include England’s MARTIN ATKINS, winner of the recent FINNISH OPEN, Eurosport’s opening WDF tournament of 2006.  Scotland’s GARY ANDERSON is the man currently in great form. He recently won the Isle Of Man Open and had the best overall single dart average of 45.62 in the Six Nations Cup.  Another recent winner is WAYNE DAVIES of Wales, who won the recent BDO Torremolinos Open.

“This is great news for WDF/BDO darts because the British Internationals have not been seen on TV for a very long time”, says Olly Croft, Secretary General of the WDF. “Needless to say, we are delighted that Eurosport is featuring this wonderful weekend of Internationals which always produces great games and electrifying excitement.  National pride is at stake and as well as making great viewing, the televising of the 2006 BDO British International Championships is a terrific bonus for our international teams”.

The Eurosport 2 coverage will feature player interviews and the closing ceremonies.
