BRITISH OPEN 2005

CLARE BYWATERS AND BRIAN SØRENSEN TAKE THE TITLES

VAN GERWEN IN THE FINAL

The overseas invaders turned up in force for the 2005 British Open which was played at the Spa in Bridlington this weekend. England's Clare Bywaters won the Women's event beating Russian Starlet Anastasia Dobromyslova by 3 legs to 1 in an excellent final. Anastasia had earlier ousted the World Nr 1 Trina Gulliver by 3 legs to 2 in the quarter-finals. England dominated the Women's event with 7 players in the quarter-finals. The same could not be said of the Men's Singles where England fielded only two representatives, neither of whom progressed to the semi-finals. Scotland and the Netherlands also had a good day, each with 3 players in the last 8. Denmark's Brian Sørensen lifted the title with a solid straight sets victory over "wonder boy" Michael van Gerwen, who at 16 years of age reached his second major international final in a month. You will remember he won the Norway Open Singles last month. The results brackets for the last 16 can be seen below. All Ranking and Invitation tables are updated.

HURRICANE KATRINA HITS WINMAU WORLD MASTERS

Two American darts players due to compete at this year’s Winmau World Masters in Bridlington, have been caught up in the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, and it extremely doubtful that they will make the trip next month.

Scott Wollaston and Ernest Commerdale are from Louisiana, the area hardest hit by the hurricane, and both have suffered major property loss and damage.  Thankfully they and their families are safe.

“These players have suffered significant loss”, says Buddy Bartoletta, President of the American Darts Organisation, “and I am delighted that when we contacted the British Darts Organisation they immediately agreed that if they cannot make it (which looks likely) then both players will be welcomed to  Bridlington for the 2006 World Masters.

“This is a great gesture from the BDO because it is the only piece of good news the two men have had since Katrina struck them and America so hard.  We will still be bringing a full complement of players to Bridlington and will make sure that we put in good performances for Scott and Ernest”.

Among the American team will be 13 year-old Ashley Stewart, the youngest ever winner of the ADO National Youth Championships and the first ever female to win the title.

“We have been welcoming American darts players to the Winmau World Masters for many years”, says Olly Croft of the BDO, “and when Buddy contacted us we did not hesitate to tell him that Scott and Ernest will be more than welcome in 2006.  We are all horrified at what this hurricane has done in America, and the fact that these two darts players may have lost everything, brings it  even closer to home”.

The Winmau World Masters will be played at The Spa Royal Hall, Bridlington from October 21st to 23rd, and will be televised by BBC TV and Dutch TV.

BAVARIA WORLD DARTS TROPHY 2005 DAY 9: THE FINALS

GARY ROBSON IS "THE KING"

Gary Robson won his first "Major" when he completed a shock victory over World Nr.1 Mervyn King by a score of 6 sets to 4. Gary controlled the match and a below par Mervyn was always struggling. Twice Mervyn pulled back a two set deficit only for Gary to pull away again. Gary ended the match with a delightful 156 checkout.

KARIN KRAPPEN IS THE WOMEN'S CHAMPION

Karin Krappen completed an excellent week's work when she proved too strong for World Nr. 2 Francisca Hoenselaar in a high quality Final. Karin beat both the Netherlands World Cup players and World Nr.1 Trina Gulliver on her way to the title, which was her first success in the event.

TONIGHT'S RESULTS: KING AND ROBSON THROUGH TO THE FINAL

Gary Robson will meet World Nr. 1 Mervyn King in tomorrows Final after a comfortable victory over a below par Mike Veitch of Scotland. Robson led by 4 set to 0 at the interval, and after the break he needed just four legs to wrap up the match. Robson played consistently, as he has done all week while Veitch was a shadow of himself.

ROBSON 5  (3.62)   VEITCH  0  (28.63)

Current World Nr. 1 Mervyn King scored a decisive victory over England Captain Martin Adams in the first semi-final of the "Bavaria" this evening in a match of the highest standard. There was little to choose between the players until they reached the doubles, and here "The King" was supreme. "Wolfie" did not make the most of many good opportunities, and Mervyn punished him severely.

KING  5  (32.75)   ADAMS  1  (31.63)

BAVARIA WORLD DARTS TROPHY 2005 DAY 7

TONIGHT'S RESULTS

World Nr.1 Mervyn King became the first semi-finalist when he ended the spirited challenge of home favourite Mareno Michels. The match was evenly poised after the first four sets, but after the interval King introduced a greater urgency into his game and ran out a comfortable winner.
World Nr.2 and local favourite Francisca Hoenselaar reached the final of the Women's event with a 2 - 1 sets win over Jan Robbins. This was not a game either will remember, as both girls missed countless darts at the doubles. Francisca will now meet Karin Krappen in an all Dutch final.

England's Captain and World Nr.2 Martin Adams fought his way to a semi-final berth with a 5 sets to 2 victory over fellow countryman Darryl Fitton. This was an extremely close encounter and there was little to choose between the players on scoring in a high quality match. However it was "Wolfie" who was the sharpest on the doubles, and he finished in style with a 126 checkout for the match.

BAVARIA WORLD DARTS TROPHY 2005 DAY 6

England's Gary Robson became the first semi-finalist when he he beat fellow countryman Martin Atkins by 5 sets to 1. The match was closer than the score-line suggests but it was Gary who hit the important doubles. He will play the winner of the Veitch - Walton match in Saturdays semi-final.
Karin Krappen was right on top of her game and she outplayed World Nr. 1 Trina Gulliver to reach the Women's Final. Trina did not play badly as her average of 24.48 proves but Karin missed nothing, as her 27.88 average shows. Karin will meet either Jan Robbins or Francisca Hoenselaar in the Final
England's John "Boy" Walton threw 18 x 180, averaged 32.77 and lost! It was Mike Veitch who drew the longest straw in a fantastic game of darts which went to a tie-break after 9 highly entertaining sets. The players threw a sum total of 109 x 100's, 60 x 140's and an amazing 27 x 180's. Mike will now play Gary Robson.

BAVARIA WORLD DARTS TROPHY 2005

Tomorrow sees the start of the 2005 Bavaria World Darts trophy. The event, which is one of the major Singles events in the darting calendar will be held at the impressive Vechtesbanen complex in Utrecht in the Netherlands.

The tournament kicks off at 14.00 CET with an all English pairing, Paul Hogan v Martin Atkins. The undisputed World Nr.1 Women Trina Gulliver makes her entrance at 15.40 CET and her opponent will be none other than Russia's Anastasia Dobromyslova, who surprised the World on this very stage just 12 months ago when she defeated Trina in the opening match by 2 sets to nil. Trina will be eager for revenge, but Anastasia fears no one, and at her best will again give the World Nr. 1 plenty to think about.

Defending Champion Raymond van Barneveld will also feature in opening session. In the last match of the afternoon session he will face Scotland's Gary Anderson. This will be an anxious moment for Barneveld's fans because he will be making his return to the big stage after a layoff which has lasted since the Tempus IDL. He has a tough nut to crack in the form of Anderson, who is capable of beating anybody when at his best.

We shall be updating the results as the matches conclude throughout the entire tournament, we shall also be supplying match reports, statistics, and other information.
