Results from day 4 - Wednesday 8th August

340 Competitors (208Men / 132Ladies) entered to contest the  New Zealand Community Trust Open Singles event at the 2007 NZ Darts Championships chasing not only World and NZ Ranking Points but also a chance at collecting the Bounty of “$10,000 for a perfect 9 dart leg game” offered by co sponsors Puma Darts Products of Kati Kati.

The Ladies Final was played between Taumaranui’s Jannette Jonathan and Rachel Padget (Southland)

Rachel took the early lead in the match by winning the first 2 legs, Jannette pulled back a win in leg 3 throwing a maximum 180 score along the way but Rachel stepped up and got the next leg to give her a 3 -1  lead. Jonathan knew she was in trouble and needed to pull out all the stops if she was to have a chance at the title. She did so by taking the next leg with a treble 20 double 3 finish (66) and a 96 finish in 6 using just 17 darts. Both players struggled with doubles in leg 8 but again it was Jannette who hit the crucial finish to tie up the game 4 all. In the final and deciding leg Jannette won the toss to throw first and managed to keep Rachel at bay until she secured the win with a double 20 “Tops” finish.

This is Jonathan’s 6 NZ Open Title with the others being in 93,94,98,00 & 2003.

In the men’s final it was Upper Hutt’s Chas Forster squaring up against the legend that is “Herbie Nathan” (Rotorua). Nathan a former NZ Team Member and International has been off the top scene for the last couple of years and was looking to stage a come back and made short work of his younger opponent taking the win 5 legs to 1 in the best of 9 final throwing 2x 180’s along the way.

The highlight of Forster’s day was perhaps beating former World Embassy Champion “Tony David” (Australia) in the semi finals.

Forster also played in the 2005 final here in Nelson 2 years ago against NZ International Warren Parry losing 4 -1.

Mixed Pairs Championship

237 Pairs battled it out in today’s event.

In the final it was the Capital pair of Rob Szabo & Anna Neho against Hutt Valley’s John “Buck” Ryan & Helen Makiha.

Both teams were a bit nervous this being their first ever NZ Championship Final but soon overcame this as the high scores started rolling in. It was Anna Neho who took the win for her and Rob in the 1st leg and then again in the 2nd with her pegging a 78 finish. Helen then got leg 3 to close the gap slightly but Anna was on form again in leg 4 nailing a crucial double 2. The game looked to be a forgone conclusion but Buck and Helen had other ideas by taking out the next 2 legs to square the match up at 3 all. Rob and Anna stepped up gear in the final leg and much to the crowds delight Rob pegged a 106 finish to secure the title for him and Anna.
