Match report: Jelle Klaasen 4 v 2 Mervyn King

Mervyn started with the darts and scored well. Jelle set him under immediate pressure with a 180 and a narrow miss at D20 but Mervyn stayed cool hitting D9 for the leg. Leg two was another close leg but a late 180 gave Mervyn a chance at 64. He needed only two darts to take a two leg lead. Leg three saw Mervyn well ahead leaving 86 after 12 darts. He narrowly missed D4 first time but came back to take the set on D2 It was Jelle with the darts in set two, and again Mervyn put him under pressure with a maximum. He was down to 72 after 12 darts but missed the checkout. However he got another chance which he also missed and Jelle held the throw with D6 for an 18 darter. Mervyn continued his excellent scoring in leg two and a 13 darter won the leg with Jelle 300 points adrift. Leg three was close with neither player hitting the really big scores until a 177 from Jelle left him D20 which he checked out for a 2-1 lead in the set. Mervyn hit back with three 140's put him well in command and a 14 darter levelled the set. Jelle was throwing for the set and Mervyn immediately pressured him with a 140. Jelle hit back hard with tow 140's of his own and a 14 darter gave him the set to level the match. Both players continued the high scoring in set three and a late 140 helped Mervyn to a 16 darter for the first leg. Jelle started leg two and kept his advantage to leave 104 after 12 darts. He checked out on D10 for the second leg. Jelle hit an opening 180 followed by a 140 against the throw in the third leg with Mervyn struggling on the scores, and a 15 dart leg gave Jelle the break. He started leg four with 43 and 81 while Mervyn hit two tons. Jelle fought back leaving D20 after 15 darts. He needed only two darts to take the set and a 2-1 lead in sets. Jelle had the darts in set four and both players again hit the high scores. Mervyn got to the double first and a 14 darter gave him the first leg. Jelle replied with a 180 at the beginning of leg two and followed with a 140 to leave Mervyn well behind. He left 44 after 9 darts but bust the checkout. He came back next time and needed only two darts to take the leg. Leg three and Jelle started. It was a mediocre leg apart from a 120 checkout from Jelle which gave. Mervyn quickly broke back and levelled the set in 14 darts. Leg five and Jelle with the darts for the set. A good leg by both players saw Jelle hold his throw from 86 for the fourth set. Set five and the pace was fast and furious, Mervyn leaving 110 after 12 darts. Jelle missed D20 but came back again to take the leg after Mervyn missed three darts at D8. Jelle continued to pound the treble and despite a maximum from Jelle Mervyn checked out on 161 for the leg. Both players continued to impress and Jelle missed three darts at the double to see Mervyn check out from 60 for the leg. and a 2-1 lead in the set. A 140 + 180 start from Mervyn gave him a slight advantage against the throw and D16 gave him the set with a 13 darter. Jelle hit yet another maximum at the start of set six and Mervyn followed him all the way Both players missed several darts at the double before Mervyn checked out on D16 to win the leg. Leg two was again a close one and it was Jelle who broke back with a 17 darter. Another 180 for Jelle was followed by one from Mervyn only for Jelle to hit another one. An 11 darter took the lkeg and he was one leg away from the match. Mervyn started leg four and a 180 gave him a lead. Again Jelle fought back but Mervyn checked out in 12 darts to level the set. Now Jelle had the darts for the match. He continued to pound the T20 and he was first to the checkout with 93 left.. He made no mistake with a D20 finish to create the upset of the championships |
