The “Mayfield Inn Trade Center” was full of excitement on Saturday, June 18th as we began the 2011 Canadian Open. With a field of 168 men and 100 women, the largest numbers that we have seen in over a decade, we just knew that this was going to be a day of excitement for some and, of course, disappointment for others.
As the knock-out round began, we saw several of the top ranked players fighting to make it into the top 16. Dave Cameron, Provincial Champion from Nova Scotia, took out several other provincial champions on his way through to the finals. Bruce Davey, a member of Team Ontario, also played well and took down his opponents, Terry Hayhurst and Ken MacNeil to name a couple, as he made his way to the final match on stage against Dave Cameron.
Bruce jumped to a great start by taking the first leg, however, Dave fought back in the second leg leaving Bruce on double top. In the next four legs, it was certainly a matter of doubles. With Bruce throwing 140-140-100, Dave answered him with 100-180-100 and with six more darts finished 64 leaving Bruce on double 10. The next three legs saw each of the players miss their doubles several times, but Dave held on strong and took the match 5-1. David shot 3 x 180 and several 140’s with Bruce also counting 6 scores of 140 and seven other scores of 100+.
In the women’s event, several of the ranked players were toppled in the round of 32. Robin Curry did not have an easy draw on her way to the finals. She met several previous winners such Kim Whaley-Hilts, Patricia Farrell and Cindy Pardy…but she stayed strong as she made her way to the finals on stage against a formidable opponent from Nova Scotia, Cindy Veith.
Cindy had several tough matches through the knock-out including her doubles partner, Darlene MacLeod. You could see the determination in her face as she stepped on stage to battle it out with Robin for the winners spot. Both ladies threw super darts and kept the crowd on the edge of their seats. The first leg saw Robin throw a 180 and follow that up with a 125. She took that leg leaving Cindy on 72. The matches went back and forth as Cindy took the 2nd leg and the 4th leg; however, Robin was not letting up. In the 5th leg, she threw 100-100-140 and with Cindy sitting on double 2, she finished double 10. Robin played tough in the 6th leg and took the match 4-2 over Cindy.
Congratulations to both Dave Cameron and Robin Curry ….well deserved wins!!
