With record breaking entries of almost 600 for the Men’s Singles and an audience of over 1400 enthusiastic fans for the Men’s and Women’s Singles finals, the BDO British Open was a huge success at The Spa, Bridlington.
The Women’s Semi Finals saw Trina Gulliver beat Cindy Pardy of Canada in a straight forward 3-0 victory, and the in-form Lorraine Farlam checking out all three of her legs with double tops – winning her 1st leg with a 70 checkout to triumph over Russia’s Anastasia Dobromyslova 3-1.
In the Women’s Singles Final Lorraine Farlam, now an ‘adopted’ Yorkshire lass after playing her first county match for Yorkshire with a winning scoreline that included checkouts of 164 and 102, as well as being happily partnered with top Yorkshire player Dean Winstanley, continued her fantastic form.
Playing Trina Gulliver, she raced into a commanding 2-0 lead and then won the title with a stunning 135 outshot – 25, t-20, bullseye!
In the Men’s Semi-Finals, Yorkshire was again well represented by Scott Waites who won the 1st set of his match with Dutch star Jan Dekker, and then checked out with a 170 before Jan hit a 132 to level at 1-1. The high-scoring Scott then had a 98 checkout to win the match.
Glen Durrant enjoyed another brilliant run and enjoyed huge support as he won the first set against Dutchman Willy van der Wiel, who hit 5 x 180’s (including 7 t-20’s to just miss a 9 darter) and big checkouts to overcome the brave challenge of Glen.
And so, just 2 weeks after his triumph in the 2011 Winmau World Masters in Hull, Scott Waites was in yet another major final in his native Yorkshire, and soon found himself in a 2-1 lead against the high-scoring Willy van der Wiel, who just couldn’t stop hitting 180’s! He hit 6 in a thrilling final, but it wasn’t enough to beat the consistent high-scoring of Scott Waites, who powered to a 3-1 victory to become 2011 BDO British Open Champion…and it was music to his ears as the capacity crowed chanted Yorkshire, Yorkshire as he received his trophy.
Scott had a 32.66 single dart average and collected another £3,000 to add to the £25,000 he won at the World Masters.
Yorkshire definitely ruled in Bridlington and there wasn’t a happier Yorkshireman than Scott.
2011 BDO British Open Singles Champions: SCOTT WAITES 3-1, and LORRAINE FARLAM 3-0.
